About Ashers Bakery

Ashers Bakery is a family run company and has been since 1877. Alister & George Asher are the current Joint Managing Directors. Robbie Asher who works in the bakery, is the 5th generation to work in the business.

Ashers through the years...

1877 - James A Asher established "James Asher & Son" at 3 Bridge Street, Nairn.

1924 - He was succeeded by his son, Alister Asher who managed the business until his death in 1945

1945 - His wife, Mary continued to run the business through difficult times with the help of her 3 children

1947 - James R Asher leaves school at the age of 14 (against the wishes of his mother) & joins the family bakery

Ashers continues to "raise" the game 2000 - Present

2000 - Sandwich vans are launched

2002 - Princess Anne formally opens Ashers new modern bakery in Nairn

2002 - Ashers open in Buckie

2003 - A cafe at Inverness Bus Station is added to our portfolio

2003 - The original Bridge Street shop is closed for redevelopment and a new shop opens at 40 High Street. 

2007 - Smillies the Baker is acquired adding another 3 shops in Elgin and Lossiemouth to the list 

2012 - First large export order for Whisky Cakes departs for China

2012 - A new shop is opened in Grantown-On-Spey

2013 - Cafe in St Giles Centre Elgin is opened

2013 - Ashers partner with Scotmid to supply their North stores

2014 - Ashers win the Scottish Baker of the Year Award

2019 - Ashers Morning Rolls win Best in Scotland Award

2020 - Ashers start their Home Delivery service to customers during the Covid19 pandemic

2021 - James R Asher (Jimmy) passes away (aged 88) after a life long career with Ashers

2021 - Artisan Ice Cream is launched in 3 Ashers stores

The company as it stands is one of the leading retail bakers in the North of Scotland and the present Directors (Alister & George Asher) are committed to continuing the expansion and improvements in quality & service that were the hallmarks of James Asher & Son.
